1. Time of the Rain. In spite of the title this is probably one of the most positive song in the album. Franco got the lyrics from one of his early poems. The insistent slide guitar riff calls to mind a melancholic wintry atmosphere.

TIME OF THE RAIN

Night’s dripping down from my eyes

Restlessly, like a crowd of tears

I stand alone, paralyzed

Have you ever been inside my dreams?

Sweet things we did in our infancy

Vanish and break without fantasy

Oh time of the rain is passed and gone

But things we said are still true

Out of the past I found love

That’s what I feel …

My face’s streaked with the tears

That I thought I had left far behind

I feel a thrill I never did before

In my sullen mind

Left here outside in the pouring rain

I’m all alone but I feel no pain

Oh time of the rain is passed and gone

But things we said are still true

Out of the past I found love

That’s what I feel about you

Time of the rain is passed and gone

But things we said are still true

Out of the past I found love

That’s what I feel about you

2. Going Back to the Blue. “The Blue is an entity, it’s something deep inside us that we are forced to face: our feelings, our beliefs, our essence, all those things we must put together to start anew” (Thank you, Lissa, you’re great). The Globe worked a lot on vocal harmonies.

GOING BACK TO THE BLUE

Did you say you want to be free?

So that’s the way you will be

I don’t want to keep you with me

If you don’t want me to

It’s time to clear it up and make it clearer once and for all

I won’t be lost without you

Do I have to carve it on your wall?

Everything is lost and I think

That I’ll just end up to drink

Maybe I should go to a shrink

Because my mind’s on the blink

I’m going nowhere and nowhere is where I come from

Should’ve listened to my mother when she told me to stop

Cause now I risk to miss all my goals

I wonder what went wrong

I realize, though lost in the fog

I’m going back to the blue

Everything is lost and I think

That I’ll just end up to drink

Maybe I should go to a shrink

Because my mind’s on the blink

I’m going nowhere and nowhere is where I come from

Should’ve listened to my mother when she told me to stop

Cause now I risk to miss all my goals

I wonder what went wrong

I realize, though lost in the fog

I’m going back to the blue

3. Truth. Andrea under the spotlight. An intensely romantic melody for a love that’s going wrong. It’s so hard to admit we’re close to the end of the feeling we’ve known.

TRUTH

Everything about you just tells me I’m your lover

But we don’t seem to notice the way we hurt each other

Well, I don’t know

I’ll keep you undercover

I don’t know the answer to all the things you ask me

Stormy clouds of sorrow are gathering all around me

Well, I don’t know

I’ll leave you far behind me

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

My life is in your hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

Please try to understand how I feel (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

You’re slipping through my hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

It’s hard to understand how it feels (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

Every time I hold you and put my arms around you

I just can’t help believing the way I feel about you

Well, I don’t know

I’ll have to live without you

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

My life is in your hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

Please try to understand how I feel (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

You’re slipping through my hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

It’s hard to understand how it feels (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

Everything about you just tells me I’m your lover

But we don’t seem to notice the way we hurt each other

Well, I don’t know

I’ll keep you undercover

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

My life is in your hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

Please try to understand how I feel (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

But you know that I can’t, oh no (I try my best to find a way)

You’re slipping through my hands, oh no (Through the crazy things we say)

It’s hard to understand how it feels (And the wicked game we play)

When we don’t say the truth

4. Poppy in Bloom. A young girl dreaming about a bigger boy. That’s real life, folks. One of Andrea’s favourites: a catchy snip-snap blues with great piano playing.

POPPY IN BLOOM

As she falls asleep she starts a neon light emotion

She holds his picture close to her breast, oh yeah

Is it just a dream or something she has not the notion

That takes her breath away in the night, oh right

And all the toys around her seem to burst in fire

She’s waiting for the time to break through

And every single word he says increases her desire

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

When the sun breaks through without the slightest hesitation

She finds it hard to face the new day, oh yeah

So she stays in bed to find her final destination

An ordinary world to play in, oh no

All the toys around her seem to burst in fire

She’s waiting for the time to break through

And every single word he says increases her desire

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

She feels just like a poppy in bloom

5. Tell Me Why. You met a girl on a train and start daydreaming about a life with her. This song is intended to be the first Globe’s single. A lot of acoustic guitar for another highly romantic song.

TELL ME WHY

I met you in the morning light

Didn’t know what I know

About your tender smile

Then I lost myself in your blue eyes

That shame the sea and the night

And shame this nervous sky

I won’t say a single word to spoil this perfect time

All I have to say I’ll keep here in my mind

Baby, please

Just tell me why do I need you

Tell me why do I want you

And I won’t blame the fate for being so cruel

And I’ll be there through the good times

I’ll be there through the bad ones

And I won’t mind the price to pay for loving you

Now every little thing I do

Is for you, it’s for two

It’s for your tender smile

I swear I’m not confusing things

Just a word from your lips

Could really make me fly

I won’t say a single word to spoil this perfect time

All I have to say I’ll keep here in my mind

Baby, please

Just tell me why do I need you

Tell me why do I want you

And I won’t blame the fate for being so cruel

And I’ll be there through the good times

I’ll be there through the bad ones

And I won’t mind the price to pay for loving you

6. Shooting Star (A Million Blue Eyed Rabbits). How many stories could be told about the genesis of this song! Andrea and Franco share the lead vocals of this dreamy song with slightly visionary lyrics.

SHOOTING STAR (A MILLION BLUE EYED RABBITS)

Yellow currents out of nowhere

Drive me high and make me wonder

Am I really thinking of you?

Or am I picturing?

While I make your celebration

I find out this new sensation

Emptiness is filling me up

It’s not a victory

A shooting star looked so far

In its glowing ember

It looked like a scar in the sky

On its skin so tender

I’m not sure, it’s so hard to remember

I could never repay

All I’ve taken from you

You’re the reason for every single thing I do

But I want you to say

That the bed times are through

Cause the farthest I go the more I’m close to you

You gave me the answer

That’s when my heart surrendered

Crumbs of light flow though my fingers

And they justify my wrinkles

As a question enters my doubts

Do I still think of you?

While I bury my perception

I imagine your reaction

But I still believe that it’s true

Because I’m missing you

A shooting star looked so far

In its glowing ember

It looked like a scar in the sky

On its skin so tender

I’m not sure, it’s so hard to remember

I could never repay

All I’ve taken from you

You’re the reason for every single thing I do

But I want you to say

That the bed times are through

Cause the farthest I go the more I’m close to you

You gave me the answer

That’s when my heart surrendered

I could never repay

All I’ve taken from you

You’re the reason for every single thing I do

But I want you to say

That the bed times are through

Cause the farthest I go the more I’m close to you

You gave me the answer

That’s when my heart surrendered

7. I Can’t. Franco seems to be a specialist in cheatin’ heart songs. It happens to the best of us: sometimes you feel so down that you think you’re not able to do anything but cry. The Globe can’t be harder than this.

I CAN’T

When I see you I go to pieces

When you’re not there I go insane

I want to stop my thoughts about you, girl

And forget you for a day

They keep on telling me each day

I should let go but I can’t

I’d like to be a stronger man

Than I am but I can’t

And it’s so hard to keep from crying

Cause when you try it hurts you more

And though you’d give her everything

You can’t show she’s meant for you

You asked me to leave you alone

To find someone new but I can’t

I’d know exactly what to say

And what to do but I can’t

Though I keep waiting for tomorrow

Don’t even know which way to go

Your carelessness gives me such sorrow

Can’t you see I need you so

I hope that soon will come a day

When I’ll go free, now I can’t

Cause though I try I just can’t hide

What I feel, no I can’t

Though I keep waiting for tomorrow

Don’t even know which way to go

Your carelessness gives me such sorrow

Can’t you see I need you so

I hope that soon will come a day

When I’ll go free, now I can’t

Cause though I try I just can’t hide

What I feel, no I can’t

I hope that soon will come a day

When I’ll go free, now I can’t

Cause though I try I just can’t hide

What I feel, no I can’t

8. Xmas Coming (Together Again). The Globe’s Christmas gift to their fans. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, this is a showdown.

XMAS COMING (TOGETHER AGAIN)

And so you left me with the promise

That you’d always be mine

It seems like years since you’ve been gone

But it was only last night

Snow is falling

And I keep saying you’re gone, you’re gone

You’re gone away, yeah

All I know

Is that I need you still

All I want

Is a feeling to feel

Christmas coming

I beg you to stay for the night

Just one night, tonight

Oh baby, please

A Christmas night just can’t last forever

But we are here now that’s all that matters

Hold my hand

Don’t ever say never

Then we’ll be together

Together again

I guess nobody ever told me

What it’s like to be loved

You’re the only one who showed me

But now you leave me alone

Snow is melting

But still our love’s a ghost

That frosts for the most of the time

All I know

Is that I want you back

All I want

Is the love that I lack

Christmas passing

I think this time is right

You’re mine, all mine

Oh baby

A Christmas night just can’t last forever

But we are here now that’s all that matters

Hold my hand

Don’t ever say never

Then we’ll be together

Together again

9. Love Won’t Last Long. One day Franco asked Andrea: “Write me a song à la Roy Orbison”. That’s done! Franco wrote the lyrics in a lonely room of a gloomy hotel in Florence just to get into the atmosphere.

LOVE WON’T LAST LONG

I see my lover

Talking to another

Can’t help but think I’ll be losing her soon

And if now it’s over

Many tears will cover

My overflowed heart that’s beating just for her

And all of the vows we made will be in vain

I never thought my life could be so wrong

A broken promise will lie in the rain

Another love of mine didn’t last long

I’ve lost my lovers

One after another

Though my intentions have always been good

But now that I’m older

I have crossed the border

Stopped living my life waiting just for her

And all of the vows we made will be in vain

I never thought my life could be so wrong

A broken promise will lie in the rain

Another love of mine didn’t last long

I see my lover

Talking to another

Can’t help but think I’ll be losing her soon

And if now it’s over

Many tears will cover

My overflowed heart that’s beating just for her

And all of the vows we made will be in vain

I never thought my life could be so wrong

A broken promise will lie in the rain

I think a love of mine will never last long

10. Burned Out Too Fast. No doubt this is the saddest song in the album. Yet, the refrain’s rhythmic change and the vigorous string arrangement sound like a healthy flush of pride. Not with a whimper but with a bang, that’s how the album ends.

BURNED OUT TOO FAST

It’s funny how things seem not to change

Every place’s the same today

But it’s even harder now

Just to find the things to say

As the evening sun goes down

I don’t regret a single thing

I just acted like I should

But please come on back and stay

Do it now before it’s too late

I wonder where you’re tonight

If you’re feeling glad or blue

And I wonder why I’m so uptight

I recall the moments that we used to share

We never had a tear to shed

(But now I feel) so sorry when I think of the past

The love we had burned out so fast

The love we had burned out so fast

The love we had burned out too fast

And I could spend my whole life through

Trying to kill my love for you

But somehow I can’t explain

How I still believe in you

After all you’ve done to me

But since the day we said goodbye

I can’t get you off my mind

So please come on back and stay

Or you’ll find it is too late

I wonder where you’re tonight

If you’re feeling glad or blue

And I wonder why I’m so uptight

I recall the moments that we used to share

We never had a tear to shed

(But now I feel) so sorry when I think of the past

The love we had burned out so fast

(But now I feel) so sorry when I think of the past

The love we had burned out so fast

The love we had burned out so fast

The love we had burned out too fast

The Globe's Story

The Globe are a musical duo formed in 1998 by Andrea Bontempi and Franco Lonati. In spite of quite different musical backgrounds, under the common passion for the Beatles’ music, they started writing songs together. Andrea is the composer of almost every Globe’s songs, while Franco is the main lyricist. After recording some demo tapes during three different sessions (August 1998, December 1998, and September 1999, with a little help from their friend Matteo Meneghello playing bass and guitar), The Globe were contacted by some small local labels. Though the compositions and the vocal skills of the band were appreciated, nothing important happened. During the next few years The Globe kept writing songs together for their personal pleasure. Their songbook currently numbers more than 70 songs. Suddenly, in May 2008 the small independent label Videoradio contacted the Globe. They signed a contract for a new album…
